Etioper fra Netanya kåret til Miss Israel

Yityish Aynaw (Foto: Avishag Shar Yashuv)Yityish Aynaw fra Netanya ble kåret til Miss Israel i slutten av februar. Hun ble dermed den første etiopisk-fødte kvinnen til å vinne konkurransen. Aynaw er tidligere offiser i den israelske hæren (IDF) og driver nå en klesbutikk.

21 år gamle Aynaw gjorde aliyah til Israel som 12-åring. I følge Aynaw var det store utfordringer knyttet til det å komme til et nytt land. Både språket og det moderne israelske samfunnet gjorde overgangen vanskelig, fortalte hun. Da Aynaw ble spurt om hvilken historisk person som har betydd mest for henne, svarte hun Martin Luther King, jr.: "Han kjempet for rettferdighet og likhet".

Aynaw fikk møte USAs president Barack Obama da han besøkte Israel i mars.
